Mushroom herb is a leafy green from the highlands of Papua New Guinea that grows well in Perth. It gets its name from the crunchy leaves that taste just like mushrooms. It is a great choice for people who want the flavour of mushrooms without the fungus. The plant grows as a thick bush with shiny dark green leaves and small blue flowers in spring.

Mushroom herb is a fast grower that loves rich soil and plenty of water. It is very hardy but might go quiet during a cold winter. You should pick the leaves often to keep the plant bushy and stop it from getting leggy. It is a superfood that has more protein than actual mushrooms and is packed with iron, calcium, and vitamin C.

Interesting Notes:

The mushroom flavour gets even stronger when you cook the leaves. You can toss them into stir fries or soups at the very end to keep the crunch. Because it is rich in chlorophyll, it is great for blood health. It is also a handy plant for a food forest because it can be used as an edible ground cover in shady spots.
