Leichhardt Bean is a stunning native Australian rainforest tree from Queensland that handles Perth's warm climate surprisingly well. It puts on a spectacular display in spring with long, dripping racemes of showy orange, yellow, and red flowers that draw in native birds and butterflies. It is a tough, adaptable species that handles heat and dry conditions once established, making it a fantastic centerpiece tree or feature canopy plant for native and food forest gardens.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 4-8m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.2
Shade or full sun: Full sun to dappled shade in Perth Metro
Minimum pot year 5: 45L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years from seed (produces long ornamental pods).
Leichhardt Bean trees feature attractive pinnate foliage with bright green leaflets. The pendulous flower spikes can grow up to 30-50 cm long, bursting into brilliant apricot to deep red tones before setting long, cylindrical woody pods. It grows relatively fast when young and copes well with sandy, well-draining soils. Regular summer watering during its first couple of seasons helps build deep roots for dry summer resilience.
Interesting Notes:
This native cassia acts as an important host plant for local butterflies, including the Tailed Emperor and Lemon Migrant. Unlike non-native yellow cassia species that can turn invasive, Cassia brewsteri is a non-invasive Australian native that brings massive ecological value and stunning seasonal color to suburban backyards.
