Common Names: Native Mulberry, White Nettle, False Stinger.
Native Mulberry is a fast growing bush tucker plant from rainforest edges in eastern Australia. It handles Perth weather well if given protection from hot afternoon sun and dry winds. The fruit is white, sweet, and soft with seeds on the outside like a strawberry. It is a great pick for food forests or local wildlife gardens.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-4m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Prefers part shade or morning sun in Perth Metro
Minimum pot year 5: 45L pot
Time to fruit age: 1-2 years from cutting or seed
This plant grows quickly with soft green leaves that have a shiny silver underside. It flowers through warmer months and sets tiny, juicy white berries that birds love. It is not a stinging nettle and does not hurt to touch. Give it good soil, plenty of water in summer, and a hard trim if dry heat gets to it.
Interesting Notes:
Aboriginal people traditionally used the strong bark fibre to make cordage and fishing nets. The leaves are also a food source for native butterflies.
Traditionally leaves were often crushed or steeped in water to create poultices for skin conditions, applied directly to soothe minor irritations, or prepared as wash solutions.
Roots and bark contain strong compounds, so they were frequently boiled or infused to extract active ingredients for treating internal discomfort, joint aches, or general body pain.
Sap and resins acted as natural antiseptics or seals for minor cuts, sores, and insect bites, helping to protect skin wounds and promote healing.
It grows fast as a pioneer species, making it handy for quick shade or privacy while other garden plants get established.
