Common Names: Okinawa Peach
Okinawa Peach is a must-have for Perth gardens. It is a very low-chill variety, meaning it will actually fruit in our warm climate while other peaches struggle. It is famous for being a tough rootstock, but the seedlings produce delicious, small to medium fruit with white flesh and a sweet, classic flavour.
Seed grown are true to type.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-4m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun
Minimum pot year 5: 45L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-4 years from seedling
These seedlings are incredibly vigorous and have excellent resistance to soil-borne pests like root-knot nematodes. They are a great choice for growers who want a hardy, self-fertile tree that handles the heat and provides a heavy crop of juicy peaches in early summer.
Interesting Notes:
So tough they are favoured as superior rootstock in warmer climates. Okinawa is often used as the "engine" for many grafted stone fruit trees because of its strong root system. Growing it as a seedling gives you a long-lived, sturdy tree. The blossoms in spring are also beautiful and will bring plenty of pollinators to your yard.
If you like the idea of free trees then this one is for you, as you too can grow as many seedlings as you want.
