Common Names: Okinawa Spinach, Hong Feng Cai, Okinawa Lettuce
Okinawa Spinach is a colourful leafy green that thrives in warm weather. The leaves are green on top and bright purple underneath, making your garden look beautiful. It is an excellent substitute for normal spinach during hot Perth summers when traditional greens wilt and go to seed.

pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: nearly full sun to very shady

This plant is very tough and grows well in Perth with regular summer watering. It creates a dense ground cover to stop weeds or grows happily in a pot on your patio. You can eat the crisp leaves raw in salads or toss them into a quick stir-fry at the very end of cooking.
Interesting Notes:
This plant is a nutritional powerhouse. It is packed with iron, calcium, and protective antioxidants from the purple pigment. People use it to help lower cholesterol, fight inflammation, and manage blood sugar.
Longevity spinach is a close relative but stays completely green and has a stronger medicinal taste. Okinawa spinach is much better for everyday cooking and salads because it tastes milder and looks stunning on the plate. Both plants grow easily from simple stem cuttings stuck straight into the dirt, meaning you will have backyard greens for years.
