Botanical Name: Olea europaea (Seedling Stock)
Common Names: Wild Olive Stock
This is a young olive tree grown from seed of arguably the best Spanish Oil producer, Picual.
Will not be true to type, but excellent growing tree, for indoors, ornamental value, shading and potential rootstock. Will also produce amazing bonsai specimens.
It will not give you the exact same Picual olives as the parent tree, but she is a tough, strong grower and a good starter plant. She is brilliant for creating quick shade in your backyard. When she is small, she is a cracking indoor plant option. This plant is your secret weapon for grafting.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-6m, or keep it short in a pot
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 8.0 (Olives are hardy)
Shade or full sun: Loves full sun, even the Perth scorchers
Minimum pot year 5: 40L pot
Time to fruit age: 7+ years (unless you graft a fancy variety onto it)
These seedlings are strong and grow quickly, making them great rootstock. That means you can graft a named olive variety like Picual or Manzanillo onto the seedling trunk to get proper fruit much faster. The roots will be super tough and hardy, helping the top part survive anything. A strong grower is a happy grower.
Interesting Notes:
You might get a wild-type olive fruit from this one, but these trees are strong, live for ages, and make an excellent hedge or windbreak anyway. They are tough as nails.
