Botanical Name: Crithmum maritimum
Common Names: Rock Samphire, Sea Fennel, Sea Pickle
Rock Samphire is a sensational seaside succulent that is a must-have for any herb or edible garden, especially along the Perth Coast. It's tough as old boots, loves the salt and sun, and gives you a flavour hit like no other. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and highly aromatic. It’s a perennial, so it keeps bouncing back.
Features:
Ideal Grow Spot: Full sun to part shade.
Grow Habit: Low-growing, sprawling, compact perennial. Grows up to about 30 cm high.
Toughness: Extra drought tolerant. Copes well with saline soils or water.
Aussie Angle: This Mediterranean native acts like a champ in our coastal conditions.
This one handles the salt, so you can tell your other herbs to get a-rock-in'!
Flavour: Strong, salty, and a bit spicy, often likened to a mix of fennel and celery.
Edible Uses: Traditionally pickled, used fresh in salads, or steamed/boiled and served with fish and seafood. It was historically carried on long sea trips to prevent scurvy because it's super high in Vitamin C.
Pro Tip: Must have well-drained soil! It won't tolerate wet feet in any form, so sandy/gravelly soil or a pot is perfect.
Limited stock. Pickup from Parkwood, WA. Delivery to Perth Metro only. Can post state wide.
