Common Names: Rose Apple, Malabar Plum
Rose Apple is a great tropical tree that does well in Perth. It gives you an unusual fruit that smells like a rose. The flesh is crunchy, pale yellow, and tastes mildly of Turkish Delight. Mildly sweet, like a mix between an apple and a rosewater-flavoured pear. It’s a good choice for people wanting something a bit different in their backyard.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3 to 5m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun when over 2m and fruiting age.
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 4 to 6 years from seed.
Rose Apple trees have pretty cream-coloured flowers that look like pom-poms from all the long stamens. The fruit is round and a pale, yellowish-green when ripe. Once they get going, the trees are tough, handle a bit of drought, and give you a good harvest. Best grown in the ground, but a big pot works if you prune it hard.
Interesting Notes:
The flavour is subtle. Don’t expect a big sugary hit. Give it a go in jams, jellies, or just sliced fresh. The rose scent is the real treat.
Rose Apple is a top addition to any food forest.
