Botanical Name: Persea americana
Common Names: Sharwill Avocado, Sharwil
Sharwill is a top shelf avocado from Australia that loves the Perth sun. It has a rough green skin and tiny seed, which means you get heaps of creamy, buttery fruit. It tastes rich and nutty, often better than what you find at the shops. It is a great pick for home gardens because the tree stays a nice size and gives you lots of green spread for your toast.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-4m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun, but needs shade when young
Minimum pot year 5: 90L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from graft
Sharwill trees are strong and grow well in our local soil. They have a B-type flower, so they fruit even better if you have an A-type tree like a Hass nearby. They need good drainage because they hate having wet feet. In Perth, you can pick the fruit from winter through to spring. Just be sure to protect them from hot winds and frost while they are small.
Interesting Notes:
The Sharwill has one of the best flesh-to-seed ratios of any avocado. The skin stays green even when it is ripe, so you have to give it a gentle squeeze to know when it is ready.
This variety is a winner for anyone who wants a gourmet harvest in a smaller backyard space.
