Elaeagnus latifolia (Bastard Oleaster, Soh Shang)
Elaeagnus latifolia is a resilient, nitrogen-fixing shrub or small tree producing oval, red fruits with a tart-sweet flavour. The fruit is commonly eaten fresh, made into jams, or used in juices and chutneys. As a nitrogen fixer, it improves soil health, making it a valuable addition to food forests and agroforestry systems. This drought-hardy and adaptable plant thrives in humid subtropical to tropical climates and can tolerate poor soils. Originally from Southeast Asia, it is a productive, low-maintenance fruiting plant that supports biodiversity.
