Botanical Name: Billardiera cymosa
Common Names: Sweet Appleberry
Sweet Appleberry is a hardy native climber and groundcover that grows naturally in coastal and inland Australia. It produces sweet, edible green-to-purplish berries with a pleasant fruit flavour often compared to stewed apples or kiwi fruit. It is an excellent choice for gardens where you want an attractive evergreen climber that double-duties as a bush food plant.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 1-2m trellis or groundcover spread
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Prefers full sun to light shade
Minimum pot year 5: 30L pot or open ground
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from tubestock
This Australian native is very low-maintenance once established, tolerating dry conditions, sandy soils, and coastal exposure. It features narrow dark green leaves and displays attractive bell-shaped violet to blue-purple flowers in spring, followed by juicy edible berries in summer. It can be trained up a trellis, allowed to scramble through shrubs, or used as a dense weed-suppressing groundcover.
Interesting Notes:
The berries were traditionally eaten raw or cooked by Indigenous Australians. They turn soft and slightly translucent when fully ripe and ready to pick.
An ideal addition to native bush food collections, habitat gardens, and waterwise landscapes.
