Sweet Calabash Passionfruit

Not seen usually in Perth. Sweet Calabash is a fascinating and highly vigorous passionfruit vine native to the tropical Americas that adapts beautifully to warm backyard microclimates. Unlike standard purple passionfruit, this variety produces perfectly round, hard-shelled green-to-yellow fruits that look like miniature gourds. Inside is a translucent, incredibly aromatic pulp that delivers a rich, sweet, punch-like flavor with a hint of grape.

It thrives with plenty of organic matter, consistent moisture through summer, and protection from severe frosts when young.

Interesting Notes:

The flowers are absolutely spectacular, featuring intricate purple and white frills that make it worth growing for the looks alone. To eat the fruit, you bypass the usual squeeze-and-pop method and give the hard shell a sharp tap on a hard surface to crack it open, revealing a fragrant, gourmet treat.
