Product Details
Tree Violet (Melicytus dentatus), also known as Sweet Violet Bush or Native Violet Tree, is a hardy native shrub or small tree that produces sweet-scented yellow-green flowers followed by edible purple berries. Though small, the fruit has a pleasant tangy flavour and is favoured by birds. With its fine, spiny branches and dense growth, it makes a useful hedging or wildlife habitat plant. It naturally occurs in dry forests and scrublands across southern Australia.

Features:

Ideal prune height: 1.5 to 3 metres

pH range: 6.0 to 8.0

Sun preference: Full sun to part shade

Minimum pot size by year 5: 30 litres

Time to fruit: 2 to 3 years

Harvest period: Late spring to summer

Notable for its small edible fruit, bird-friendly habitat, and natural protection barrier

Tree Violet grows well in poor or rocky soils and tolerates dry spells once established. It benefits from occasional pruning to shape and thicken the canopy. Its prickly nature makes it great for wildlife gardens or as a living fence. Fruit can be eaten raw or used to attract birds into the garden.

Perfect for native food forests and those wanting a protective edible hedge. Limited stock. Pickup from Parkwood (near Riverton) by appointment only. Over 700 fruit tree types growing here—send your list for a quote.
