Tumeric

The turmeric plant (Curcuma longa) is a hardy and versatile herbaceous perennial, prized for its vibrant yellow rhizomes packed with culinary and health benefits. Native to South Asia, this plant thrives in warm, humid conditions and grows well in loamy, well-draining soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). It prefers partial shade to full sun and requires consistent watering to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Turmeric plants grow up to 1 metre tall with lush, broad green leaves and occasional pale yellow flowers. In pots, a minimum size of 20 litres is ideal for long-term growth. Mature rhizomes can be harvested in 8–10 months. Turmeric is an excellent companion for ginger and other tropical plants, enhancing biodiversity and soil health.
