Common Names: White Aspen, Yellow Wood, Pigeon Berry
White Aspen is a beautiful rainforest tree from the citrus family that handles Perth conditions surprisingly well. It is a fast grower with glossy, aromatic leaves that smell like lemon when crushed. The tree produces clusters of unique, star-shaped white fruit that have a sophisticated citrus and honey flavour.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 4-6m
pH growing conditions: 5.5 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun to part shade; prefers shelter from hot winds
Minimum pot year 5: 50L pot
Time to fruit age: 3-5 years
In the garden, White Aspen stays a manageable size and makes an excellent screen or specimen tree. It loves a mulch-heavy soil that stays moist but drains well. While it can handle full sun, giving it some afternoon shade in the peak of a Perth summer will keep the foliage looking its best. It is also a magnet for local birds and butterflies.
Interesting Notes:
The fruit is a gourmet bush tucker favourite with a refreshing, acidic zing. Chefs use it fresh in salads, seafood dishes, or to make unique jams and syrups. Because it is related to citrus, the fruit has a familiar tang but with a complex "pine and honey" twist. The leaves also have traditional medicinal uses due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
