Botanical Name: Morus alba
Common Names: White Mulberry, Silkworm Mulberry
White mulberry is a tough deciduous tree that loves the Perth sun. It is a classic for a reason. You get thick summer shade and sweet fruit that does not stain your pavers like the black ones do. It is a fast grower and handles our heat well once it settles in.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 3-5m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.5
Shade or full sun: Full sun
Minimum pot year 5: 60L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from a cutting or grafted plant.
These trees are very hardy and grow in most Perth soils. They drop their leaves in winter which lets the sun through to warm your house. The fruit is long and white with a honey sweet taste. It is great for kids because it does not make a mess on clothes. You can also eat the young leaves cooked or dry them for tea.
Interesting Notes:
If you have kids they will love feeding the leaves to silkworms. The fruit is also full of vitamin C and iron. You can dry the berries to use like raisins in your muesli. White mulberries are a great choice if you want a big shade tree that pays you back in food.
