Botanical Name: Persea americana
Common Names: Wurtz Avocado, Little Cado
Wurtz is one of the best choice for small Perth gardens or anyone wanting to grow fruit in a pot. It is a true dwarf variety with a beautiful weeping look that stays small and easy to manage. The fruit is pear-shaped with green skin and a rich, buttery taste. Since it does not get huge like other avocados, you can easily reach all the fruit without a giant ladder.
Features:
Ideal prune height range: 2-3m
pH growing conditions: 6.0 to 7.0
Shade or full sun: Full sun, but protect from hot afternoon sun when young
Minimum pot year 5: 75L to 90L pot
Time to fruit age: 2-3 years from graft
Wurtz trees are tough and love the sun, but like all avocados, they hate wet feet. Make sure your soil drains well or plant them on a small mound. They have A-type flowers and are self-fertile, but they will crop even better if you have a B-type tree like Sharwill or Fuerte nearby. In Perth, your avocados will be ready to pick from late winter through to summer.
Interesting Notes:
Wurtz is often called Little Cado because some people regard it as the only true dwarf avocado. The skin stays green when it is ripe, so look for a duller colour and give it a soft press to see if it is ready for your morning toast.
This is the perfect tree for a courtyard or a big pot on a sunny balcony.
