English Names: Australian Boab, Bottle Tree, Baobab
The Australian Boab is an iconic tree native to the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Known for its massive, swollen trunk that stores water during drought, the boab is perfectly adapted to dry conditions. It has attractive, glossy green leaves and produces fragrant, white flowers followed by large, woody seed pods. The fruit pulp is rich in vitamin C and can be eaten, while the young leaves and seeds are also edible.
The boab is slow-growing but develops a striking silhouette, making it a prized ornamental tree. It thrives in hot, arid climates and tolerates poor soils, making it ideal for Perth gardens. Protect trees under 1m from cold winter nights. Bring inside during winter, do not water often in winter.
With its unique shape and historical significance, the boab is a conversation starter and a valuable addition to any landscape.
