Giant Jaboticaba

Giant Jaboticaba is a rare understory tree from Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest that features large leathery leaves and impressive, oversized 5cm  fruits. This unique collector's plant thrives in a shaded position in the Perth Metro area and prefers deep, rich, well-draining soil. It makes an excellent addition to a suburban food forest or a specialized rare fruit collection.

This slow-growing tree forms a thick canopy and a distinctively bumpy trunk where white flowers pop up directly on the bark. It produces large, dark purple berries up to 5cm across with a juicy, sweet white pulp and a pleasant, subtle tang. The tree gives a dependable crop twice a year, usually in autumn and spring. Its hard, heavy wood is traditionally valued for making strong tool handles and slow-burning charcoal.
